In World Literature, we tautologically discuss those writings about gods and goddesses…or the period of Middle Ages where Roman authors keep on writing stories about limited insights on human nature in fine Latin. Roman authors always keep on forming public consciousness towards religiosity and the intervention of these gods in human’s life. For this, they tend to keep their culture as well as the status quo; and the rising point of revamping their way of writing and colloquialism. But also, during this period, someone takes his stand that ends this era and brings life to its newest form, the age of Renaissance. This is somewhat related on life towards faith, the Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy” that will surely give a great impact on one’s faith and deity. We usually think that comedy is a kind of humorous stuff. But during the Middle Ages, Dante stepped in to change people’s view of Christianity by converting a melodramatic note into a thrilling journey that has a blissful finale. At first glance, I look it as very sensitive matter to critique and find it very awesome for him to take his introspective view outwardly just to change the notion within his country.
Dante Alighieri wrote his Divine Comedy that was divided into 3 factions: the Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. Each part consists of 33 Cantos (in measure of 9-7-9) in an epic trecets (or 3 lines) form. He also put such term as “circles” in defining people’s vices with conforming punishments.
In his Inferno, he tackled things that are really sensitive but, the starting point of enlightenment of his readers. He used allegorical characters like Plutus as the gatekeeper of the 4th circle or the counter part of Hades; the two groups of Wasters and Hoarders who are in the front line of judging each others, questioning one’s bad habits and fighting for their narrow-mindedness; and the last, the divine minister named Fortuna that holds people’s wealth and destiny. He also heaved the issue of gluttony, profligacy and hatred. The first one talks about monks and church leaders comprising people’s wealth for their own satisfaction. Second, was to trigger people’s urge in wasting money without any beneficial means. And third, the hatred of an individual towards his fellow that leads him to kill; or even hating inwardly that kills one’s sanity. In this point, this word pops out…“research”.
Why do we need to study these things? What’s the relation of Literature in taking our profession? Anyone will surely ask the same thing. But for me, Dante’s Inferno is not merely about life and pious fad but a perfect bullet in our career. Since we’re in the line of Communication Research, we tend to do some covert things. We tend to hurt, degrade, and kill others with our tactless, tiring and voracious truth.
In Dante’s works, I could simply give issues in our line: the fabrication of data, negative use of research, and the nonstop issue of plagiarism.
Seemingly, in order to take our research be valid and reliable, we need to gather data with in-depth understanding of it. But, if it’s overtly done, then it’s not likely to be search for. So, we use to have modicum of deception to dig it up and have it covertly. And this little amount of deception is still, against to one’s privacy. This falsification is somewhat overused by others due to their greedy aims. Just like in gag shows. I don’t know if it’s over-sensitive but I used to look at it as degradable. I can’t stay laughing at those filthy people on screen. But still, for the sake of enjoying people, for the sake of our voracious mentality of the word happiness, TV networks keep on doing these shits.
Another one is the negative use of research. Some media were killed by unfolding stories due to their role as watchdogs of society…as well as the reason of destitution. Obviously, when in terms of money, people tend to lose their dignity and eat their pride. And as one of the powerful tool in building and destructing people, researchers tend to make messy stuff. Some were used to research certain issues as their weapons in this chaotic and muddy world idealisms and political thing.
Lastly, Plagiarism - The never-ending topic in any symposiums. Obviously, when it terms of information, there’s a lot of things to comply with. We are being spilled of it and it’s for us to identify which is which and what is what. After all the research we’ve made, I still keep on thinking on the real truth. Apparently, even professional researchers are taking information as theirs even its not. They seem to take information as it’s solely made by them. It’s not the issue of one’s fame but the respect to your fellows who fatally made that information you own.
We are now in fast padding generation. And even a simple writings can be used in any aspects… in life, religion, and profession.
